Keep Your Hair On by Elizabeth Vercoe

Front CoverI had everything! A life I loved, great friends, a wonderful new boyfriend but then cancer come along and had to make everything complicated. Didn’t it?

Young Jess had just found out she had cancer. Changes were happening to her, her hair was falling out; she was sick and struggled to complete a full day of school. And how was she meant to tell her new boyfriend when she didn’t wasn’t to tell him at all?
She knows it will be hard to tell him. Yet when was the right time? Will she leave it too late? Would he think different about her once he knows?

Jess’s family are always there for her, but her little brother takes on the stress of keeping Jess's secret from her new boyfriend’s friend. Finally once Jess and her mum find out about what has happened to Spud (her brother,) and why he has been acting differently, she is angry with herself and other people and decides to do something about it.

Jess’s friends were supportive to start off with but supporting your friend with cancer isn’t easy. Looking at a sick person or hearing about them isn't many peoples cup of tea. That's how it was with one of Jess's closest friends. Throughout this book, Jess losses friends and finds out who her true friends are.

This book is short but sweet. It is a good read or people that doesn't like reading long stories but loves a complicated love story between a teenage girl and boy. Keep Your Hair On has its sad moments and also happy ones. Usually the good things life have to be taken from us for better things to come along.
