City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

What would you do if your mum was kidnaped? You were seeing strange people nobody else can see and everything you thought you knew was a lie. Clary Fray has lived a normal sheltered life with her mother. That was until she witnessed the murder of a boy by three teenage shadow hunters. That’s not the worst of it. The body disappeared into thin air and nobody else can see the people who did it. City of bones is the first novel in the mortal instruments series.

Clary saw the murder of a teenage boy and nothing has been the same since. Her mother has been kidnapped and to get her back she has to join with a group of shadow hunters, who pride themselves in ridding the world of demons. Clary soon befriends the charming and mysterious Jace. Clary finds herself torn between her geeky best friend Simon and the demon killing shadow hunter Jace. With the help of Jace and the other shadow hunters Clary enters a world her mother never wanted her to see. A world filled with vampires, werewolves, warlocks and sneaky fairy's. Can clary save her mother? And is clary really human or is her mother hiding a dark secret?

Jace with his funny one liners and confident attitude is by far my favourite character in this novel. Clary brought out a side of Jace that nobody knew existed. Clary describes Jace as angel like and says his hair looks like a halo. He knew he had feelings for Clary that he hadn't experienced with any other girl. Jace is also very confident in his looks and ability's and loves to make smart comments. He takes his job as a shadow hunter very seriously and is the best his age. Jace is outgoing and willing to go head first into hard and dangerous situations. All the boys want to be him and all the girls want to be with him.

I loved how at the start of the three sections there was a quote that had to do with what was to come. I also loved how the novel was written in third person point of view. It gives you an idea of how the other characters were feeling through the novel rather than just one protagonist.

I absolutely loved this novel. It kept me involved, turning the page and not wanting to put it down. I have recommended this novel to all my friends. The idea of another world that humans didn't know about was very fascinating. The whole series is very well written.  It has fantasy mixed with romance and I recommend you read it!

  2. MORTAL INSTRUMENTS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is also a prequel to the seris that are just as good and you should prabably read before these ones. Jace is pretty cool Bree, but sorry, Magnus is the best. If anyone reads the seris, youll agree he rocks (magnus is a awsome, hippie warlock, and he's with Alec- Jaces really close friend almost a brother- btw)Good job Bree:) yep i agree Georgia, but a hundred more times not just one. So excited for Heavenly Fire (comes out in 2014) and the new book in the Infernal Devices, Clockwork Princess (March 2013)!!!!!!!!!
