Now- By Morris Gleitzman

  The book Now penned by Morris Gleitzman continues Felix’s story which began with Once and Then. Felix was a young boy, fighting to save his life, but also his best friend Zelda's. Sadly he couldn't do so, and watched Zelda hang from a post. Now, Felix is turning eighty years old, and his granddaughter Zelda is staying with him. They have a close relationship, and are each other's inspiration. Throughout the novel, there are important situations that Zelda and Felix have to face. All you can ask yourself is 'will they succeed?’ Imagine having a grandfather who had to fight to stay alive as a young boy, and save people’s lives as a man. This was Zelda's grandfather Felix's life.

 My favourite character throughout the novel is Zelda. She is so brave and has a similar personality to Felix when he was a boy- young and fragile, but so brave and strong. Zelda was named after Felix's best friend. She at first hates the idea of being named after someone else, because she believes she has large shoes to fill. But soon realises that she is so strong and brave in her own way, and has no reason to feel like someone with a 'second hand' name.

I had read the previous books in the series, and was really intrigued to read Now. Morris Gleitzman almost wrote these books so that you can read them in any order. They have information about previous books in them, so you can understand most of the story line. He has kept the same writing style throughout the whole series which is written from the viewpoint of a character. At the beginning of the book, I almost felt as though it was too confusing for me, and had no real story line. Oh how wrong I was. As I kept reading on, Felix and Zelda went through so many nail biting situations, which brought the story to life.  I would seriously recommend this book for anyone who has or had a family member who fought in the war. If you have some time to kill, pick up Now or another book in the series, but I warn you, you will need tissues!
